What is First Aid?

First Aid is the first response to any person who is injured or ill – in pre-hospital emergency medical situations.

 

First Aid includes:

 

  • Identifying the emergency
  • Calling for help if needed
  • Diagnosing the medical condition
  • Treatment and transport of the patient/injured person to the hospital for further assessment/treatment.

 

Our goal in delivering first aid is actually two fold: the first is to diagnose the medical condition and the second is to provide basic medical care. It is not necessarily to improve the condition of the patient/injured person, but rather to prevent any further decline in health.

As with any type of license, First Aid Responders have their permitted scope of practice and prohibitions:

The role of a First Aid Responder is to:

  • Scan the area and search for vital information
  • Call for more help if necessary
  • Distance the patient/injured person from dangerous situations or endangering factors
  • Treatment according to the knowledge learned from the course (most of our work is to quickly and effectively stop bleeding)
  • Maintaining the patient’s personal privacy

The First Aid Responder’s prohibitions:

1. Cannot give the patient medication
2. Cannot hit/harm the patient
3. Cannot pronounce death
4. Cannot carry out any invasive action
5. Cannot take action beyond the permitted scope of practice learned in this course
